Common Good recently celebrated nine mothers who completed the Early Childhood Development programme run at True North in Vrygrond. Judging by the smile on their beautiful faces much has changed over the past few weeks.
“Because of the ECD programme, I was able to let go of the hard-hearted, uncaring and angry person I had become. I began to realise what it meant to love my family, to set goals for myself and to ultimately come to know who God is. I now see potential in my children’s future and I realise how much they need me to lead them,” says one of the ladies whose third baby is due in a few weeks.
The programme teaches mothers about the four building blocks that are essential for a baby’s first 1000 days, namely love, nutrition, stimulation and safety. Other topics include purpose, belonging, identity, dealing with anger and conflict, how to set boundaries and forgiveness.
The graduation ceremony was a huge cause for celebration as each of these moms received their certificates for completing the course. The Baby Box Project also surprised each graduate with a wonderful hamper of essential baby care items. Thanks to Ronnie Vincent for arranging this.
It was a joy to witness the sincere love and friendship these ladies have developed with one another, and to hear how the programme has changed their lives. Many of them expressed how much they had enjoyed a sense of warmth and love within the group, which they were otherwise not used to experiencing.
What a wonderful celebration of motherhood, a supportive community and hope!
